BIOGRAPHY

Liisa Viima is a contemporary abstract artist known for her expressive use of color, bold textures, and dynamic brushwork. Her work often incorporates gypsum reliefs shaped with stencils and enriched with fragments of stone, tiles, or broken glass. These surfaces are finished with shimmering mica pigments and resin—a unique technique she has personally developed and refined.

Viima’s work revolves around themes of humanity, love, and forgiveness. She explores these through recurring symbols such as human faces, hearts, stars, hands, the moon, pigeons, and horses. A profound influence on her artistic vision is Don Diego Velázquez’s Christ Crucified (1632), particularly its depiction of Christ’s suffering. In addition, ancient legends serve as a rich source of inspiration in her creative process.

Viima is a member of the Finnish Artists’ Association and has held numerous solo exhibitions, as well as participated in curated and group shows. She was honored with a Letter of Honour by The Pinacothèque, a private museum in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, both in 2022 and 2024, in connection with the museum’s annual Luxembourg Art Prize.

Her commissioned works are typically large-scale and tailored to specific spaces or themes. Currently, she is working on a new collection titled Modern Icons, a vibrant series that continues to explore her signature themes and techniques. Seven pieces have been completed so far, one of which – ”Ego Eimi” – was chosen to be shown in the curated annual exhibition by the Finnish Artists’ Association at Cable Factory Art Center in Helsinki. 13. – 31.8.2025.
